FROM DURMITOR
TO KOTOR BAY
We invite you to meet us in the heart of the Balkans, in Montenegro to be exact, this small territory of six hundred thousand inhabitants, with only recent borders but a rich and ancient history. During this unique road-trip, you'll discover no less than three national parks listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Durmitor National Park and Biogradska Gora National Park, where mountain landscapes predominate. Next up is the Bay of Kotor, with its Mediterranean landscapes.
On our electrically-assisted mountain bikes, we ride along small mountain trails, large forest tracks and, last but not least, bucolic country roads.
Montenegro has to be earned, but what a treat!

THE ROUTE
Day 1 : Tivat airport / Pluzine
Arrival at Tivat airport, followed by transfer by private vehicle to Pluzine in the foothills of the Durmitor massif, at the foot of two canyons, the Piva and Vrbrinka, offering spectacular views. The turquoise waters of the reservoirs contrast with the surrounding low vegetation. Don't hesitate to take a stroll in the surrounding area to soak up the peace and quiet. You can also visit the Piva monastery with its interior murals, true Orthodox treasures.
We take advantage of this day to meet the guide and the other participants in a cosy ecolodge, surrounded by small log cabins.
Day 2 : Pluzine / Zabljak - 50 km
First day of asphalt-only riding. But what a day! We're gaining altitude, with almost 1,800 m of positive ascent over the whole day. Fortunately, the electric assistance of our mountain bikes is there to help us reach our goal. The road winds its way up the mountainside, where one rock-cut tunnel follows another, giving way to spectacular views. As we gain altitude, hairpin bend after hairpin bend, the vegetation of the foothills gives way to rocky alpine meadows. We reach the heights of the town of Zabljak, the highest in the Balkans and the gateway to Durmitor at almost 1500 m above sea level. This no-frills town is a call to adventure. Twenty or so peaks, over 2200 m high, tower all around it. The Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its endemic flora and insects.
A well-deserved overnight stay awaits us in a wooden eco-village, where we'll be spending the next two nights.
Day 3 : Zabljak / Zabljak - 54 km
Day 3 is a tour of the great lakes, on mostly accessible gravel tracks. There are seven lakes on the program, including the best-known, Crno Lake, more commonly known as the Black Lake, in which you can even take a dip. The rocky promontories overlook immense black forests, where stretches of water act as clearings.
We'll also tackle the Tara Canyon, the deepest in Europe, with a vertical drop of up to 1300 m.
Weather permitting, we'll have a picnic by one of the lakes.
A few trails await to spice up the day!
Day 4 : Zabljak / Mojkovac - 65 km
Today we leave Zabljak for an intense crossing of Durmitor from west to east. It's the biggest day of the trip, and one small trail after another is a delight to ride!
There's no sign of human presence anywhere, just Mother Nature dictating our path through this unspoilt alpine landscape.
In a never-ending descent, we reach the Tara river. From here, we change banks to reach the town of Mojkovac, where a well-deserved night's sleep awaits us.
Day 5 : Mojkovac / Kolasin - 49 km
On our last day in the mountains, we discover the Biogradska Gora National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. A marvel of biodiversity, its ecosystem includes one of Europe's last remaining primary forests. Nature is unspoilt and untouched by human activity, and overflows with native species. We enjoy the pearl of the national park, Biogradsko Lake, and continue along the ridges of this massif, offering us incredible scenery.
Kolasin is the ideal place to try kachamak, a traditional Montenegrin dish, a cousin of our Aligot d'Aubrac, which is best enjoyed in winter… or after a good hard day's mountain biking.
Day 6 : Kotor / Kotor - 40 km
Early in the morning, we leave our bikes behind for a few hours and head south towards the coast, in a private vehicle, to reach Kotor, our starting point a few days earlier.
We start our last day of mountain biking by venturing into the famous Mouths of Kotor, a splendid bay made up of four gulfs with depths of up to 60 m. This bay is also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The bay is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On the road, we drive through steep limestone landscapes, in stark contrast to the granite dominance of the previous days. The occasionally thick vegetation of Durmitor and Biogradska Gora has given way to dry, Mediterranean vegetation.
Views of picturesque ports such as Tivat, secret beaches and coves, and the island of Notre Dame de la Miséricorde make for an unforgettable last day.
By the sea, we close the last chapter of our trip with a Montenegrin wine, such as the Pro Anima Pinot Blanc from Domaine de Plantaze, which we recommend with a seafood platter.
Day 7 : Kotor / Aéroport Tivat
Transfer to Tivat airport. End of our services.
To extend the pleasure, book one or more additional nights in Kotor or our three-day extension between the Skadar Lake National Park and the Adriatic coast.
